SpaceX designs, manufactures and launches rockets and spacecraft to revolutionize space access and enable humanity to become a multiplanetary species. Founded in 2002 by Elon Musk, SpaceX has developed increasingly capable vehicles, including the reusable Falcon 9 rocket which has completed 319 launches with a 99.38% success rate as of early 2024. The company's Dragon spacecraft became the first private spacecraft to dock with the International Space Station (ISS) in 2012 and has since completed 23 cargo resupply missions and 13 crewed flights to the ISS.
SpaceX is a leading provider of commercial launch services and has pioneered rocket reusability to dramatically reduce the cost of access to space. The company is developing its next-generation fully reusable launch system, Starship, designed to carry crew and cargo to Earth orbit, the Moon, Mars and beyond. Starship is expected to be capable of carrying up to 150 metric tons to orbit in its reusable configuration. In addition, SpaceX operates Starlink, a constellation of satellites in low Earth orbit providing high-speed, low-latency internet. As of July 2023, Starlink had over 4,500 satellites in orbit and more than 1.5 million subscribers across 60+ countries.
SpaceX continues to push the boundaries of space technology as it works toward its long-term mission. However, it faces risks and challenges including the inherent dangers of spaceflight, difficulties managing an exponentially growing satellite constellation, potential conflicts with other space actors over the use of near-Earth orbit, and the need to align ambitious exploration goals with near-term business needs. With an experienced leadership team, a focus on innovation, and strong support from key customers, SpaceX is positioned to keep revolutionizing space access and exploration.
