Rec Room is a cross-platform VR user-generated content gaming platform that allows users to create and play games in immersive virtual environments. Founded in 2016 by a team of ex-Microsoft HoloLens engineers, Rec Room has grown to 82 million lifetime users as of February 2024. The platform is available on VR, PC, iOS, Android, PlayStation, and Xbox.
Rec Room offers two main modes of gameplay: Rec Room Originals featuring games like Paintball and Rec Royale, and Player-Created Rooms built using intuitive in-game tools. In 2022, Rec Room launched Rec Room Studio in beta, a Unity-powered plug-in enabling users to import 3D assets and create more complex games without coding knowledge. Rec Room Plus subscribers can sell their creations for tokens and cash out real money.
Having raised $294 million in funding, Rec Room aims to make game creation accessible to all and become a defining platform in the growing VR gaming market, which is projected to reach $109.6 billion by 2030. Strategic brand partnerships and a young user base aged 13-16 have fueled Rec Room's growth.
