PsiQuantum is the developer of a quantum computer that uses photonic qubits, which have significant advantages over the leading alternatives at the scale required to deliver a fault-tolerant, general-purpose quantum computer. Its product is intended to be the first utility-scale quantum computer, enabling customers to solve real-world problems in healthcare, agriculture, finance, energy, climate, transportation, communications, and beyond.
The company was founded in 2016 by a team of quantum physics and engineering experts - Jeremy O'Brien (CEO), Pete Shadbolt (Chief Science Officer), Mark Thompson (Chief Technologist) and Terry Rudolph (Chief Architect). Their goal is to build a million qubit, fault-tolerant quantum computer to solve complex real-world problems.
PsiQuantum has partnered with semiconductor manufacturer GlobalFoundries to produce quantum photonic chips at scale using standard foundry processes. The company has made significant progress, completing seven tapeouts and manufacturing hundreds of wafers containing key quantum components like single-photon sources and detectors. PsiQuantum is now developing an ultra-high-performance optical switch, a critical element for scaling to millions of qubits.
With $665 million raised from top investors like BlackRock and Microsoft's M12 venture fund, PsiQuantum is well-positioned to continue advancing its unique photonic approach. While years of development still remain, PsiQuantum aims to deliver a quantum computer this decade that could transform industries from healthcare to finance, energy, climate, and transportation. The company was recently selected by DARPA's US2QC program to further develop its utility-scale quantum computing technology.
