Luma AI is a visual generative AI company focused on developing advanced models for 3D object generation and photorealistic rendering. Their flagship product, Genie, allows users to create interactive 3D assets from text prompts. Launched in November 2023, Genie quickly gained traction, attracting tens of thousands of users on its first day. Luma is now making Genie generally available while working on next-generation multimodal AI models to push the boundaries of visual generative AI.
The founding team brings deep expertise in computer vision, 3D rendering, and generative models. Co-founder and CTO Alex Yu authored pioneering papers on real-time neural rendering and 3D generation before leaving his PhD to start Luma. Co-founder and CEO Amit Jain previously worked on Apple's Vision Pro, lending his product design experience. Other key hires include Chief Scientist Jiaming Song, who advanced diffusion model performance, and Matthew Tancik, a creator of Neural Radiance Fields.
To fuel its ambitious roadmap, Luma raised a $43 million Series B led by Andreessen Horowitz, valuing the company between $200-300 million. The funds will expand Luma's research and engineering teams as it builds a large GPU cluster for model training. While facing competition in the growing 3D generative AI space, Luma believes its focus on fidelity, speed, and usability will differentiate its offerings. For those passionate about pushing visual AI boundaries, Luma offers the opportunity to work on cutting-edge research translated into impactful products. However, scaling multimodal models and managing data complexity remain key challenges.
