Cockroach Labs develops CockroachDB, a cloud-native distributed SQL database that enables enterprises to build scalable, resilient applications. The company serves over 200 customers including Netflix, Comcast, Bose, and two of the top five global banks, with tens of thousands of clusters in deployment. Cockroach Labs tripled its ARR in 2021 and is focused on accelerating growth, especially in its serverless product launched in 2022.
Cockroach Labs was founded in 2015 by former Google infrastructure engineers Spencer Kimball, Peter Mattis, and Ben Darnell. Kimball and Mattis previously co-founded photo sharing app Viewfinder, where they encountered the database scalability challenges that inspired CockroachDB. Darnell worked on Google Reader and Colossus, a precursor to GFS.
With $633 million in funding, Cockroach Labs is rapidly expanding its global presence. The company recently opened an office in India and plans to grow go-to-market activities in APAC and LATAM. Cockroach Labs has also invested in its serverless and dedicated cloud products which are seeing 500% year-over-year growth. Key challenges include data migration friction and evolving security requirements that could slow cloud adoption.
Employees at Cockroach Labs have the opportunity to define a new category of database as global businesses transition to the cloud. They will work with a world-class engineering team, many from Google's infrastructure org that created Colossus, Spanner and F1. However, the high-growth startup environment can be intense and the technology complex, so the company seeks gritty, low-ego builders excited to tackle hard technical problems.
